Kozushima Streetlight Upgrade

Kozushima Village (on a small island south of Tokyo, Japan) replaced over 400 streetlights, with stunning results.  The new lights show wonderful shielding.  Not only do they emit no light to the sky above, but are shielded to block the light toward a person on the ground who is standing at a distance.

Cities in Colorado could learn from Kozushima’s experience.  The new lights follow several of the IDA’s recommendations:

1.  Shielding
2.  Lower intensity
3.  Color (2700 degrees K)
4.  LED technology
